Import, buy, repair, or get rescued in Kenya with the Carhoot app

Carhoot is Kenya’s number one automobile solutions provider. They have a mobile app that covers end-to-end car solutions.

This includes car services, buy & sell of cars, rescue services, car auto parts purchase, and, the import of cars.

Project Scope

The Carhoot team was not happy with the existing user experience & user interface of the app. They approached us for brand identity as well as UI/UX design activities.

Outcomes

In the promised timeline, our team was able to deliver all the files including style guides, logo design, UI/UX design, and prototypes.

The entire UX strategy (which took multiple workshops) turned out well.

We worked in LFD and MFD with several iterations before working on the HFD. The entire project took 12 weeks to complete from the discovery session to the design handoff.

Styleguides

Based on our discovery session with the Carhoot team, we managed to come up with three different style guides and there were several iterations down the road.

This was a difficult one as the taste of the target audience was completely different from what we were expecting. The final primary color was bright yellow (Yes, it’s true).

Following are some other attributes for the selected styleguide:

1. Yellow and orange for a vibrant look
2. San-serif font for a modern & clean look
3. Combination of rasters and vectors
4. Rounded design for friendliness
5. 3D icons to bring out the life

Logo Design

After exploring 100s of concepts, we came up with 4 good concepts for the icon mark. Luckily, one out of the 4 concepts was liked & approved by the client.

The final icon mark was a combination of the letter ‘C’ with the steering wheel and 2 ’O’s from the wordmark that was written using a san-serif font. 

UX Design

Based on the approved sitemap, we were supposed to build the UX for 42 mobile app screens.

This took a while as most of the elements were fetched via Vendor API.

The app was designed similar to a super app that comprised many products starting from car service to car rescue (the inspiration was the Uber App).

The entire activity was divided into two phases i.e. LFD & MFD.

After a couple of feedback rounds, all the screen UX was finalized by the Carhoot team.

Finally, we went ahead with the HFD.

UI Design

Lastly, in the design phase, we were supposed to build high-fidelity designs with interactive prototypes for the mobile app.

The UX or mid-fidelity screens were combined with the approved style guide with a proper design system in place. The activity was done only for IOS devices.

A lot of difficulties were faced due to yellow being the primary color but our UI team took care of it by using it mostly in banners, vectors, icons, and promotional sections.

The outcome was loved by the client. Finally, the design handoff was done to the development team.
